Immersive Journeys: Experiencing Ghana’s Culture
Culture is a tad bit different, but not much. Plus, it’s very beneficial!
Let’s dive in!
Ghana functions using their own money, so if you are using the ATM, you will be receiving Ghana cedis. As of now the ratio is 12 cedis = 1 US Dollar. One of the things I admire about Ghana is the hustle, every time you hit the road you will see so many people selling things, I mean you can find anything from the comfort of your car. A lot of people consider Ghana to still be very expensive which is true if you are in the city of Accra, most restaurants will equal to what you might pay in the USA, but not all. If you go to local shops, restaurants, or markets you will definably get more bang for your buck. Now this is when being with a local comes in handy, because as soon as they hear you talk, the prices are going to go up. Honestly, they will be higher, but still a good price. For example, I got my hair braided while there, about 6 stitch braid and I paid $10 USD, of course I tipped. If you can, wait to get your hair braided once you arrive, do! Beauty services are usually at a good price. The only scary part was the way they burn off the fly aways (lo) the flame is so huge they do not use a lighter it is literally a huge fire (visit the home page to see photo). I just closed my eyes the whole time.
When it comes to safety I felt completely safe moving around Ghana, even when I was not with any one from there. Most people are very sweet and kind. At the same time remember no matter where you go in the world pay attention and make moves with common sense. I was living my best life so, I did have a driver the whole time due to my aunt’s connections, but the most common ways to get around are Ubers and Bolt. FYI if you want to get picked up, make sure you select cash option (lol) on the app. One of the only things that made me uncomfortable is the cops do random car checks, and most time its literally just to get money. Also, the roads are bumpy, so many potholes, so prepare for the ride.
Ghana is extremely HOT! Please bring a portable fan, always keep it charged!
Tip: Keep cash on you at all times!
